Language Core—This class helps develop the reading and critical thinking skills necessary to understand academic texts; improves skills in organization, development and expression of ideas in preparation for academic writing; and enhances writing and editing skills with communicative practice and review of correct grammatical forms.
Skills Proficiency—This class focuses on a study of a particular area of instruction, such as reading skills (to improve reading comprehension and speed), listening skills (academic lectures and note-taking), or pronunciation (practice and improvement of native speech patterns). Two skills areas are studied every semester.
Thematic Mini Course—This class involves study of a content area of instruction, so students understand topics related to university classes. Students may study American cultures, human behavior, earth science, U.S. history or critical thinking. Students work on improving all areas of language development and learn how to write research papers.
TOEFL Preparation—This course prepares students for the TOEFL exam by studying language and test-taking skills. This exam is an admission requirement for international undergraduate and graduate students at many universities throughout the United States.
